Spirit’s Trinity Rodman injures leg on day of USWNT call-up

Trinity Rodman injured her right leg just hours after she was called up to the U.S. national team, leading to an emotional exit during a Washington Spirit victory.
The 23-year-old forward sustained the injury and was replaced in the 41st minute of the 4-0 win over Monterrey in a CONCACAF W Championship Cup match Wednesday in Washington, D.C. She was seen in a knee brace and crutches after the game.
Spirit coach Adrian Gonzalez told reporters that Rodman will undergo tests Thursday to determine the extent of the injury. Just hours earlier, she was among those named to United States Women’s National Team coach Emma Haye’s 26-player roster for three upcoming friendlies.
Rosemonde Kouassi logged a goal and assist in Wednesday’s win. Croix Bethune and Gift Monday also scored for the Sprit. Valeria Del Campo scored an own goal in the 67 minute for the final score of the match. The Spirit outshot Monterrey 17-3, including a 6-1 edge in shots on goal.
Rodman totaled five goals and two assists over 15 NWSL appearances this season.
The Spirit (12-4-8), who sit in second place in the NWSL standings, will host the Orlando Pride in a rematch of the NWSL title game at 12:30 p.m. EDT Saturday at Audi Field.
They will take on the Utah Royals in their regular season finale Nov. 2 in Sandy, Utah. The Spirit clinched the No. 2 seed in the NWSL playoffs, which start Nov. 7. The NWSL finale will be Nov. 22 at PayPal Park in San Jose, Calif.
The U.S. women will play Portugal in the first of three October friendlies Oct. 23 in Chester, Pa. They will host Portugal again Oct. 26 in East Hartford, Conn. The final October friendly will be against New Zealand on Oct. 29 in Kansas City, Mo.
Michelle Cooper, Catarina Macario, Yazmeen Ryan, Emma Sears, Ally Sentnor and Alyssa Thompson were the other forwards named to Hayes’ 26-player training camp roster.
