Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca has a 100% chance of keeping his job for the rest of the season, despite the Blues’ recent stretch of mediocrity, director Jonathan Goldstein said.
Goldstein made the comments during an appearance on Bloomberg TV. Advertisement
“He’s doing a great job,” Goldstein said. “Chelsea started the season very well. The past six weeks have been, you know, finding their feet a little bit more. But Enzo has clearly done a great job in bringing the team together, bringing the talent through.
“We are very optimistic for the rest of the season and how that plays out.”
Maresca said “100%,” when asked if Maresca will keep his job for the rest of the campaign.
The Blues hired Maresca in June after former coach Mauricio Pochettino left the club. Maresca’s club lost to 2-0 to Manchester City in his debut Aug. 18 in London. They went 8-1-1 through his first 10 matches in charge.
The Blues went 11-2-3 over their next 15 games. They are 3-5-2 over their last 10 games, including their active, two-game skid. They sit in sixth place in the Premier League standings. Advertisement
The Blues suffered a 3-0 loss to Brighton in their last match Friday.
“Probably, since I arrived, that is the worst performance, especially in the moment we are in,” Maresca told reporters.
“The performance is not one you want to offer, so we are very upset, and especially very sorry for the fans who were here. … In this moment, you cannot offer this kind of performance with 14 games to go, now 13 games to go. In terms of desire, we need to show more.”
Maresca and the Blues (12-7-6) will play Aston Villa (10-7-9) in a Premier League match at 12:30 p.m. EST Saturday in Birmingham, England.
